As the sun gets lower and lower in the sky, its light passes through more and more air layers—compared to noontime, when the sun is directly overhead. This causes the sun’s light to bend as if through a prism, scattering the blue light in favor of reds, oranges, and purples. That splitting of the spectrum can sometimes result in a great final moment and since we face the ocean, there’s nothing in the way of the horizon. All of this almost guarantees nearly every sunset in our coastal Oregon area to be stunning.
