Things to Do Before Moving

Couple Carrying Boxes

Moving can be both exciting and stressful. With so much to do, many things can go wrong. But mishaps in moving can be avoided with the right preparation.

Here are some tips on what you can do to make your moving experience as trouble-free as possible.

Pace Your Packing

If you have the time, don’t burn yourself out packing in one excruciatingly long packing session. You should instead spread these packing sessions as evenly as your schedule allows. This creates less stress and conserves more energy for all the unpacking afterward at the new place.

Switch Your Utilities

Make sure that you update your location with your utility companies, such as your Wi-Fi, power, and gas providers. For water and sewage, you most likely have to coordinate with the public utilities office of your new community. Double-check to make sure that utilities like power and running water are available when you move into your new home.

Forgetting this incredibly simple step could result in headaches as you might have to go without an important service for an extended time. This is especially true if you’re moving into newly-built home or one that’s unfinished or was previously vacant. If you fail to arrange for a disconnection and reconnection service in your new place, you might have to establish utilities from scratch, which will take even more time.

Skip the cardboard boxes

There are some moving companies that offer reusable container boxes with detachable lids. Ask your moving company whether they offer such boxes. These are not only eco-friendly but are also cheaper. They’re also less troublesome than raiding the local recycling center for cardboard boxes, or buying expensive moving boxes, acres of bubble wrap, and miles of duct tape.

Haul the basics before the moving truck comes

This step is practical if your new place is not very far from your old one. You can have essential things like toiletries, eating implements, and home clothes bought over to your new place. This way, when you move, everything you need will be readily available even before you unpack.

Don’t pack your closet

There are some moving companies that offer wardrobe boxes for customers to use. All that needs to be done is to take your clothes, still in their hangers, from your closet and hang them in the provided boxes. Then the company would have the boxes taken to your new place and voila – no need to fold, pack, or clean your clothes again after the move.

Discover the local resources

Take a good look around your new neighborhood to see where the nearest facilities are. Find out where the local post office, the nearest hospital, the most convenient restaurants, and the resident handyman can be found. This helps you to get your bearings and gives you assurance that you know where to get help when you need it.

Change the Locks

Changing the locks at the new place before the move ensures that no one but you have a copy of the keys. This gives you peace of mind, knowing that you can securely leave valuables behind in the home.
